The designation “soteriology” refers to the study of biblical salvation.  The word “salvation” is derived from the Greek word sodezo which means “to save, preserve or rescue.”  The noun form, “salvation,” describes the divine act of providing a means of deliverance for God’s people.

Because of man’s willful sinfulness that has brought him separation and alienation from God, any thought of being reconciled to God must be dependent upon some external action that sinful man is unable to perform by his own labors.
